5 Foods I’ve Tried and Loved

5 foods

If you know me, you know I love to eat! I’d go as far as saying I like eating a little too much—as I am writing this with a stomach ache from a giant burrito. As you can imagine, one of my favorite things about going to new places is trying unfamiliar food. That is why I assembled a list of 5 foods I’ve tried and loved!

1. Netherlands – Vegetarian Bitterballen

A Dutch tradition, Bitterballen is typically meat-based. It began as a way to use leftovers. Women would take meat scraps, water, and bread crumbs and roll them into a ball. Then the men would take them to eat while out hunting. Today it is made by frying a ball of thick beef stew, meat, and roux (a mixture of fat) or, less disturbing, mashed potatoes. However, I am a pescatarian so I indulged in the vegetarian rendition, which also seemed pretty popular. Instead of meat, this version uses vegetable stock and mushrooms.

2. Iceland – Fish and Chips

Okay, I have had Fish and Chips before. They just hit differently in Iceland, and it’s not just because of the stunning dinner view. The fish in Iceland are fried with a batter made from spelt flour (a special kind of whole wheat), rapeseed oil, and without beer. I’ve seen it described as a tempura-like texture, and I totally agree. Additionally, it is coupled with a Skyronnaise sauce. Skyronnaise is a condiment made from popular Icelandic yogurt Skyr, olive oil, and various seasonings.

3. Thailand – Purple Yam Soup

I am sure “purple yam soup” is not the official title of the dish, but that is what I am calling it. I have seen many sources saying it is from Vietnam or Malaysia. However, my introduction to the dish was in Northern Thailand when my host family prepared it for me while on a Workaway. Regardless, it is safe to say it is a dish of Southeast Asia. The soup reminded me of an even creamier take on potato soup and was a comfort food away from home.

4. Ecuador – Fried Cheese Empanada

I can not think of anything better than fried dough stuffed with cheese. Oh wait—GIANT fried dough stuffed with cheese!

5. Thailand – Butterfly Pea Flowers

Not only does eating Butterfly Pea flowers make you feel like a fairy, but they also have various health benefits. According to Healthline.com, they can support skin and hair health, might help you lose weight, and lower blood sugar. I have also heard that they reduce anxiety, which is hopeful for us anxious wanderers.
