The Sticky Waterfalls

Sticky Waterfalls

My first visit to Bua Tong – also called the Sticky Waterfalls – in Thailand really stuck with me (pun intended). In fact, I loved it so much I went a second time! Unlike most waterfalls that must be admired from afar, the sticky waterfalls are meant to be played in! You can actually hike all the way down the falls.

The best way to describe the rock formations would be as giant bubbles engulfed by rushing water. If this sounds otherworldly, it’s because it is. I half expected to see a mermaid perched on one of the rocks brushing her hair.

Initially, the waterfalls were intimidating. It is hard to believe that walking down slanted rocks while water is rushing at your feet could be safe. Fortunately, hiking down is a lot easier than it looks. However, the word “sticky” is slightly misleading. The rocks are not sticky like how superglue is when it gets stuck between your fingers. I would use the word “grippy” as a more accurate description. Whether you call it grippy or sticky, the point is you won’t slip. This is due to the calcium carbonate in the water – I’m not a scientist so I can’t give you any more information than that. Nonetheless, I can tell you to bring your bathing suit and expect to get wet!

Most people who visit Bua Tong come from Chiang Mai. It is about an hour’s drive north, so plan to make a day out of it. I recommend taking a motorbike – I don’t think there’s anything more freeing than riding through the countryside of Thailand on a bike. If that doesn’t sound like it’d be for you, tours and buses are also available. Once you arrive, I suggest hiking around for a couple of hours, then checking out the park’s restaurant. Its owners are very welcoming, and the authentic food is extremely satisfying after a day in the sun.
